First of all, 4-6 or 3-7 deserves no postseason at all. If we get in, then it's a tribute to how bad the system is and not about how much we've earned a playoff birth. And if we do get in, then congrats! The 3-7 Union bears get a first round home game against Grayson County! Whoopie! That should go over swimmingly well. My question is this, if we're going 3-7 or 4-6 against this schedule which is a great deal easier than last years, (no harlan county, a down gate city team, a down lebanon team, thomas walker is on the schedule) then what will next year be like with no nathan baker, no tyler barker, no evan orr, no jake huff and numerous other talented veteran seniors graduating. This was the year to make some noise! Now, I'm not saying that we had the best team ever. I dont think that this team was capable of winning state. I'm simply stating that we had more talent than we had over the past 4 or 5 seasons. We could have made it to the second or third round of the playoffs. We could/should have won 7 or 8 games on this schedule. We absolutely SHOULD have gone undefeated through the LPD. Currently, we're winless in the LPD and haven't won a game since Lebanon during mid september.
I just find it curious that kids who have played football for their entire lives dont know how to get the right personnel on the field for a game tying two point conversion (Lee, ten men on the field), why its necessary to call two consecutive timeouts on fourth down against gate city, why we cant recover a squib kick against richlands with 1:30 to go in the fourth quarter in order to give the offense a last opportunity to win the game, why nathan baker knocks home a 38 yard field goal in the clutch against richlands and now he can't make an extra point, why we CANT manage the clock as the half is drawing to a close or the clock is winding down in the fourth quarter, why we dont call timeouts with 3 or 4 minutes to preserve clock as opposed to holding those timeouts with one minute to go against Gate City when we're down two touchdowns and the outcome is decided. I'm just curious.
We dont play intelligent football in many cases, and that a reflection of our coaching. We can do better than this regime, and both communities deserve better. This is not as bad as it's going to get. The longer Travis languishes in this job, the worse our program will become. I'm not talking about firing him to the extent that you put him out of teaching. He's probably tenured, and has earned the job security that comes along with his seniority. He does not have some divine right to coach our football team.
All valid points though Dishner hit the fg and not Jug. There in your statement lies the problem, you can't replace a coaching position when there is no position to replace. You will never see a Head Coach who isn't a teacher or administrator in football and probably these days any other sport. There is simply too much risk involved with insurance, etc. I do personally feel it has hurt our JV and 8th grade teams to not have some volunteer coaches involved. I appreciate your passion to want to win. It shows we have people who truly love football, but I think we need to allow time for Coach Turner to grow. If you look at the early career records of many HOF coaches I dare to say few if any were very succesful early on. The one thing I don't think you can question is the love and commitment these men display in their coaching. They are doing a lot of good and right things and so long as they keep doing those things and continue to learn, the program success will come.
If you think this you're delusional. Dope Bucket was the worst thing to ever happen to you guys this season. He picked Union to fire up the bunch from Burton and everyone of you guys fell for it hook line and sinker. Clintwood and Burton both have far better players (yes Biggin, FAR BETTER) and Union in on par with Central. Clintwood and Burton have far better coaching staffs. Clintwood and Burton both have kids that have won games and been on good teams. I know it's hard for some of you guys to accept this, but Union is just not any good. There is no plethora of talent, what you're losing isn't going to be some huge detriment to your future. In 2 years when Clintwood has ran through there pool of talent from the last few years and Crowder and Miles graduates, you'll run this thing. Until then be ready for 3rd or 4th.

I've heard for 10 years that the talent pool is running out at JIB. seems every year the talent is suppose to dry up. scares me that it has been said for so long. starting to think about the way Appy went. Here is hoping we have some more talent coming up that can keep it going.

I don't know that it's drying up there, but after Crowder and Miles leave it'll be at least a small amount of rebuilding/stepping back. Union has a chance to contend then. After next years Clintwood SR's graduate, lean times are a coming. It's less from lack of athletes than it is lack of linemen.
